Professional Development
For over 20 years, FYV has trained educators of all subjects in our award-winning Literacy-through-Theater methodology. Teachers who have taken FYV Professional Development workshops have come from over 100 schools around New York City, public and private, elementary through college, (at such institutions as, NYU, Bank Street College, Hunter College), as well as schools for special learners, such as the Stephen Gaynor School. The FYV method uses acting and playwriting tools to enhance reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, and improves overall emotional literacy, as well as academic literacy. FYV trained educators have used the method to work with all kinds of learners, of all ages and backgrounds, in General Education and Special Education Classrooms.
Led by founder, Gail Noppe-Brandon, MA, MPA, LMSW, former Assistant Dean of Arts & Sciences, NYU.
The FYV Professional Development training is fully experiential, and uses the same methodology and follows the same model as our FYV workshops for students. Participants study published monologues and write and perform one another’s original plays, while honing their pedagogical skills.
15 Hour Week-Long Summer Training (July 23-27, 2012)
Guided writing sessions in which participants develop, revise and complete finished plays, which inevitably tell the stories of what is on their minds, and in their hearts.
Guided acting sessions which participants study and perform published monologues, and learn to become better listeners and more sensitive communicators.
Final presentation for invited guests, who witness the finished plays performed by workshop participants.
Participating educators receive a Certificate in Emotional Literacy upon successful completion of the course.
“As a result of this training, I now see my one-on-one time with students as the
essence, the gift, the moment. Educators need more encounters with finding
your-voice opportunities like this.”
-Dr. Emily White, Leadership Center, Bank Street College
“Writing with purpose, critical thinking, fluency, and making authentic human
connections, are all skills that can be developed through the process that FYV
follows.”
-Kristen Plylar-Moore, Teacher, The Stephen Gaynor School
